Free Access for LDS Members to Ancestry, MyHeritage, etc.

Through reciprocal agreements with Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast, and American Ancestors, Church members have free access to resources at all of these paid subscription services. Access to set up a free account with any of these is through this page; thereafter users can go directly to the respective sites.

https://familysearch.org/partneraccess

Note the following:

  • Ancestry has the most records (but there is a lot of overlap).
  • MyHeritage has a technological lead in automated matching and record searchs, as well as more records from many non-English speaking countries
  • FindMyPast is particularly strong in British records.
  • The record sets of all these overlap somewhat, but differences in indexing and search technology make it useful to search the same record set at different sites, and to keep trees in multiple places, to profit from automated search technologies.
Items for Monthly Report
  • Number of individuals/families assisted during the month (visited or substantively helped by phone, e-mail, etc.)
  • Names of individuals/families assisted
  • Progress on your own family history (your chosen activity, whatever it is)
  • Any online or other training sessions completed during the month

This report is due to the stake before the second Sunday of each month. If you want to save Brother Heeder some time, e-mail it to him in the first few days of the month.

Feel free to use this form, if it’s helpful: monthly consultant report (PDF)

Online Training

There’s a wealth of training for family history consultants online at LDS.org. Family history consultants should gradually work their way through most or all of it. Please report your progress to Brother Heeder and/or Brother Rodeback.

Family History Consultant Training (note especially the online resources)

FamilySearch itself offers some excellent training resources on diverse topics:

Last (and definitely least), here are links to 20 essays on family history work by David Rodeback. There are anecdotes ranging from silly to serious, and notes on finding and working with various types of records.
